Motivations for setting up an SMSF

In a report by the SMSF Association, the most common motivations of survey participants in setting up SMSFs was to achieve better returns. The top three motivations were to:

  • achieve better returns (59%)
  • take greater control over personal finances (53%)
  • lower cost/fee structure (43%)

  • accessing a wider range of investment options (39%)
  • being more agile, to take advantage of investment opportunities (32%)
  • SMSFs are more tax effective (28%)
  • ability to invest in property using super funds (15%)
