Motivations for setting up an SMSF
In a report by the SMSF Association, the most common motivations of survey participants in setting up SMSFs was to achieve better returns. The top three motivations were to:
- achieve better returns (59%)
- take greater control over personal finances (53%)
- lower cost/fee structure (43%)

- accessing a wider range of investment options (39%)
- being more agile, to take advantage of investment opportunities (32%)
- SMSFs are more tax effective (28%)
- ability to invest in property using super funds (15%)
